Rohtang Pass

Your Manali trip is incomplete unless you visit Rohtang Pass. Rohtang is the ultimate attraction of the itinerary. It connects the Kullu Valley with the lahul speety valleys of Himachal Pradesh.

Located at a distance of just 51 kilometers from the Manali town, Rohtang Pass can be reached only by road. The pass is located at a massive height of 13,000 58 feet. The way of the heels is a treat to the eyes as the vehicle climbs higher on the Manali Keylong road, the beauty of the landscape around will leave you awestruck. Rohtang pass permit is required by all visitors. In winter Rohtang Pass remains closed due to heavy snowfall.

Rohtang Pass is one of the most popular tourist place in Kullu Manali.Distance from Kullu to Rohtang is about 90 kms and Distance from Manali to Rohtang is about 52 kms.

Tourist always eager to know whether Rohtang Pass will be open in their travelling time or not. It was long back (aprx 12 Yrs) when Rohtang was covered with snow and tourist could enjoy snow all the time.But now People has to wait to for Rohtang to open as it gets covered from snow (Nov to May mid).

The Pass is open from May Mid to Nov end (Aprx) and rest of the year it is closed due to snow. It has also become very popular place among Bollywood and lots of movies has been picturised at Rohtang Pass and near by areas like Marhi, Gulaba.

Himachal Govt is going to Start Ropeway from Manali to Rohtang Pass soon. It will take 15 minutes to reach Rohtang Pass by Cable Car. Hopefully the project will bring new excitement for tourists and make the sightseeing in Manali easy.

There are many more passes a Lahaul and Spiti which have specific names like Kumzam Pass, Bara Lacha pass etc. But this is being the most easiest reachable and oldest pass. The Road goes to Rohtang Pass from Kullu Valley to Manali and to Keylong and Lahul passing Rohtang Pass. The Road is very busy in Summer months due to heavy traffic of tourist going Leh through this route.

There is also few waterfalls on the way to Rohtang Pass. There are Splendid Glaciers, mountain peaks and cahndra river flowing down to Lahaul Spiti.

A Photographs taken from Rohtang Pass shows the route from Manali to Marhi and to Rohtang. Marhi is around 35 kms from Manali and 15 kms before Rohtang.

The pass is open from June to September, although trekkers can cross the pass from May. Beyond Rohtang pass lies the remote and, perhaps, the stark and haunting landscape of predominantly Buddhist areas. The comparative inaccessibility of the place has helped preserve the pristine culture of the people of the region.

Rohtang Pass Permit

From 2016 onwards Union in Manali has started issueing the permits for vehichles to Rohtang Pass in order to lower down the pollution in that area. Permit are issued to first 400 Diesel Cabs and 800 Petrol Vehichles. Permits are applicable for only next two days from the issuing date. Rohtang Pass is closed on tuesdays and also no permits are issued on tuesdays. It is marked as for mantaince of the roads. Tax of around Rs 500 and cogestion charges of Rs 50 has to be paid accordingly to NGT Guidelines. Mandatory information required for Rohtang Pass Permit - Valid ID Proof, Valid Pollution Under Check (PUC) Certificate and Vehicle Registration Date (Age of vehicle not to be more than 10 years).

Rohtang Road Tunnel

This highway is under military and due to that this need to open entire year for them. Indian Govt started building 9 kms long tunnel in 2010 to by pass Rohtang Pass for making it safer all year around will link to Keylong, Lahaul and Spiti then to Leh and Ladakh. This tunnel will shorten the distance of about 52 kms and reduce the travel time to 5 Hrs from North and South sides. Where it takes about 4 to 5 hours to go and come down from Rohtang, then it will take hardly 1 hours to and fro.
